Using the tech tools of today in world language instruction

- LangMedia has a special mission to provide materials in languages less-commonly offered by colleges and universities in the United States. The site also has a commitment to providing authentic materials depicting differences in regional dialects and language-usage among speakers of the more commonly taught languages worldwide.
CultureTalk features video clips of interviews and discussions with people from many different countries and of many different ages and walks of life. Some interviews and discussions are in English; more are in the language(s) if the countries involved. Translations and/or transcripts are given for all non-English video clips. Topics include family, food, education, religious and cultural customs, work, art, sport, travel, and more.
Students can connect with another class, individual, subject area expert.
Students can exchange dialogue and questions.
Students can work on collaborative projects. (wiki, blog, google docs etc..)

Web communication tools such as blogs can be used to foster student discussions beyond the classroom walls. A blog allows for a topic to be posted. Student can then reply to the posting with their own answers, opinions, and ideas. Students can also start their own discussion for classmates to respond to.
In foreign language courses students may be asked to view an overseas news cast, a foreign language video on youtube or united streaming, a spanish television show, or read a news article from a foreign source. They then can post their responses to the assignment on a blog. This medium allows students time to formulate their responses. Research has shown that some students become even more vocal using this semi-annonymous method over traditional classroom methods. Student responses are written in the language they are studying.
Blogs can be used to facilitate a discussion between two classrooms in two different parts of the world.
Blogs allow students the ability to incorporate other mediums such as video and audio to express their understanding or opinion on a subject.
Multimedia applications can be used to create presentations. These presentations can include audio, video, pictures and text.
Presentations of this type are an expample of project based learning.
Students can organize photographs from areas of study, video clips and their own recorded narration to create multimedia presentations. These presentations can be published online for review. They also can be syndicated via RSS feeds. Another option is to post the presentations on itunes. They then can be downloaded onto ipods.

- This is a free download from microsoft. It allows students to import pictures, record narration,
apply music, and adjust transitions and effects. The outcome is a mulimedia presentation in a
windows media file format.
-Windows Movie Maker
- This software is part of the windows operating system. It allows for the creation and editing of
video productions. You can import video clips, add transitions, narration and effects.
Apples version of Movie Maker with even more features.
- Students create a travel video on a country they are studying. All narration will be in the language spoken in that
- Students create a unit review using audio and video. It can be posted online for other students to download on
ipods or home computers to review.
- Students create a multimedia presentation about the country, state, city they live in. They can create this project for a
class overseas that they are collaborting with. They will utilize the language they are studying in this project.
- Students create a commercial for a product in the language they are studying. English subtitles can be used.
Podcasting - Audio Video Recording
Audio and video recording are an excellent tool in foreign language instruction. There are a variety of free tools available that can record and publish audio as well as video.
Audacity -- Free audio recording and mixing software.
Garage Band - Software available on Apple computers only

Ipod or Ipod Touch
Students record foreign language conversations. This can be reviewed by the student for practice or by the teacher for assessment.
Students narrate a story or news broadcast in the language they are studying.
Teacher records vocabulary words and posts online. Students download onto their ipods or listen on their home computer.
Students complete audio assignments and post them to a class blog.
CD's provided with classroom textbooks can be downloaded onto the computer and available for student download. Students can download these files onto an ipod.
Audio prompts for tests can be downloaded onto classroom ipods. Students can review the prompts while taking the test. The have control of the prompts. They can pause, rewind and stop at their own pace.
Microphones can be purchased for Ipod Nano's. Students can record on them.
Students can listen to a variety of available foreign language podcasts. They then can respond to them in class, through a blog, wiki or other assignment.
MP3 Recorders allow students to easily record dialogue and upload to a computer via a usb interface.
